- Abstract
- This polygon shapefile contains core based statistical areas in the United States and Puerto Rico. The map layer was created from the CENSUS 2010 TIGER/Line files produced by the U.S. Census Bureau. Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) comprise both Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas. CBSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of the county, counties, or equivalent entities associated with at least one urban core (urbanized area or urban cluster) having a population of at least 10,000. Adjacent counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured through commuting ties with the counties containing the core are included as part of a CBSA. There are two categories of CBSAs: Metropolitan Statistical Areas are CBSAs associated with at least one urbanized area that has a population of at least 50,000. The metropolitan statistical area comprises the central county or counties or equivalent entities containing the core, plus adjacent outlying counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the central county or counties as measured through commuting. Micropolitan Statistical Areas are CBSAs associated with at least one urban cluster that has a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000. The micropolitan statistical area comprises the central county or counties or equivalent entities containing the core, plus adjacent outlying counties having a high degree of social and economic integration with the central county or counties as measured through commuting. The CBSAs for the 2010 Census are those defined by OMB and published in December 2009. This layer is part of the 1997-2014 edition of the National Atlas of the United States.
- Purpose
- These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:1,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the National Atlas of the United States in the use of these data.

- Description
- The TIGER CBSA files were downloaded from the U.S. Census Bureau web site and loaded to ArcMap along with the National Atlas 1M Counties 2013 data. A point file was created containing centroids for all counties, and from that point file, all the points falling in CBSAs were selected and saved as a new file. The Census CBSA attributes were associated with the appropriate counties by joining the CBSA file to the selected county centroids; the resulting file was then joined to the county polygons. The dissolve tool was used to combine all the counties within each CBSA, by dissolving on the name and CBSA identification number, and the State. Some CBSAs cross State lines; these areas were merged across the State lines, population and square miles values were totaled, and the value for State was adjusted to include all appropriate State abbreviations. At the end of this step, all counties that are not part of a CBSA had been deleted from the data set. Extraneous fields were eliminated and the table was reordered. The data were converted to an Albers Equal Area projection. An attribute field for perimeter was added, and the values were calculated using ArcGIS. The data were then converted back to geographic coordinates. The attribute names and values were adjusted to meet National Atlas standards, and the map layer was saved in shapefile and in file geodatabase formats.
